Thu Sep 12 01:13:14 UTC 2024: ## McIlroy’s Exhibition Match Aimed at Pleasing Golf Fans, Not LIV Deal

**Castle Rock, Colorado** – Rory McIlroy, a prominent figure in the ongoing golf feud, has stated that his decision to play in an exhibition match with world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and LIV Golf stars Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka was primarily driven by a desire to excite fans.

McIlroy, who has been outspoken in his criticism of LIV Golf, emphasized that the December match is not intended as a message to the Saudi-backed league. He described it as an opportunity to showcase the “possibilities” of seeing the best players compete together more frequently.

“It’s more we wanted to do something that, I guess, all golf fans could get excited about,” McIlroy said. “You’ve got the best player in the world (Scheffler). You’ve got two guys in Bryson and Brooks that have won majors in the last two years. You’ve got me in there, who – I haven’t done what those guys have done the last couple years but I’ve definitely been, I feel, one of the best players in the world.”

While the match is a positive step towards uniting the golfing world, it comes amidst ongoing talks between the PGA Tour and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), which finances LIV Golf. The two entities are scheduled to meet in New York next week, sparking speculation of a potential investment deal that could bring an end to the sport’s division.

McIlroy, however, remains uncertain about the specifics of these talks, stating he is “not a part” of them. He emphasized that everyone in the golfing community is looking for a “solution” and a way to move forward.

“I think we are all in the game of golf trying to look for a solution to all this and try to move forward,” he said. “So we’ll see, yeah. I know as much as you do at this point, and I’m sure news will start to trickle out here in the next few days.”

Despite the ongoing turmoil, McIlroy remains optimistic about a resolution, reiterating that everyone involved “would love there to be one.” He acknowledges the complexity of the situation, highlighting the different interests and desires of all parties. Ultimately, he hopes for a “compromise” that can bring the sport back together.

“Hopefully, we’ll be hearing some good news in the foreseeable future where things start to come back together,” McIlroy added.
