**New Delhi, September 13, 2024:** In a move aimed at “freeing the nation from colonial imprints,” the Indian government has announced the renaming of Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, to Sri Vijaya Puram. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in a social media post, cited the colonial legacy of the former name and emphasized the new name’s symbolic representation of the victory achieved in India’s freedom struggle.
Shah highlighted the islands’ pivotal role in the nation’s history, noting their significance as a naval base for the Chola Empire and the site where Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose unfurled the Indian flag for the first time. He also mentioned the Cellular Jail, where freedom fighter Veer Savarkar and others fought for an independent India.
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a Union Territory, hold a rich historical and cultural significance. The archipelago, famed for its pristine natural beauty and diverse flora and fauna, has been inhabited for thousands of years, with evidence dating back to the Middle Palaeolithic period. The indigenous communities of the Andamans and Nicobars, including the Great Andamanese, Jarawa, Onge, Sentinelese, Nicobarese, and Shompen, have maintained their unique identities and traditions for centuries.
