**Richwoods, Missouri** – A Washington County, Missouri, sheriff’s deputy was seriously injured after being pinned between two vehicles during an altercation with a suspect, who was subsequently shot and killed by other deputies. The incident occurred on Tuesday night in the parking lot of Roy’s Convenience Store on Highway 47 in Richwoods.
The deceased suspect has been identified as David Michael Peter, 36, of the Fletcher area. Sheriff Zach Jacobsen reported that deputies were called to the store after a clerk reported Peter as a trespasser. When deputies arrived, Peter refused to exit his pickup truck and provided a false name. He then put the truck into gear and attempted to drive away.
A deputy leaned into the vehicle in an effort to put the truck in park. As the deputy was still partly inside the vehicle, Peter accelerated, striking the deputy’s patrol car. The impact pinned the deputy between the truck and the patrol car. Deputies then fired upon Peter, who subsequently struck a second patrol car before coming to a stop.
The injured deputy was released from the hospital and, along with the other deputies involved, will be off duty for an unspecified time before returning to work.
Sheriff Jacobsen has requested the Missouri Highway Patrol to investigate the shooting, particularly regarding the deputies’ use of force. The patrol will submit their findings to the county prosecutor. The sheriff stated he believes the community deserves transparency and an independent third-party investigation.
This incident comes after a string of police shootings in the St. Louis metropolitan area in 2023, which included incidents of officers being fired upon and officers using force in various situations.
