**GREATER NOIDA (UP), Sept 11:** Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday called for increased investment in domestic semiconductor manufacturing, highlighting the crucial role it plays in modern technology and the global economy. Speaking at the SEMICON 2024 conference, Modi emphasized the need for a resilient supply chain, citing the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing US-China trade war.
“India is working to create resilience in different sectors of the economy,” Modi said. He pointed to the country’s stable policies, reformist regime, and thriving technology market as key attractions for investors, declaring that “This is the right time to be in India.”
Modi unveiled the government’s ambitious plan to build a strong domestic semiconductor industry, noting that India has attracted over ₹1.5 lakh crore in investments already. This includes partnerships with global giants like Micron Technology, Tata, and Adani Group, who are building chip manufacturing and assembly facilities across the country.
“Our dream is that every device in the world will have an Indian-made chip,” Modi stated, outlining the government’s commitment to making India a semiconductor powerhouse.
With India already being the second-largest market for 5G handsets globally, Modi outlined an even larger vision to boost the electronics sector to USD 500 billion by the end of the decade, creating 6 million jobs in the process. This growth will directly benefit the semiconductor industry, leading to the ultimate goal of 100% domestic electronic manufacturing.
“India will make semiconductor chips and the finished product too,” Modi asserted.
