**Portland, OR** – A newly discovered collection of photographs taken by Paul McCartney himself is offering a glimpse into the whirlwind early days of The Beatles, as they were catapulted to global fame in 1963-64. The exhibition, “Paul McCartney Photographs 1963-64: Eyes of the Storm,” opens at the Portland Art Museum on September 14th, showcasing over 250 images.
The photographs, many of which were taken during the band’s first major tour, capture the Beatles at concerts, backstage, in hotels, and even on vacation in Miami. They offer a unique perspective on Beatlemania, from the adoring fans to the band members themselves.
The exhibition is not just for Beatles fanatics, according to Julia Dolan, the museum’s photography curator. “Even if you weren’t around when they were at their peak, you can’t escape their cultural impact,” Dolan says. “The photos also hold their own as historical documents of a pivotal period in music and culture.”
While McCartney doesn’t claim to be a professional photographer, he has always been passionate about the medium. The exhibition reveals his keen eye for composition and a clear understanding of photographic techniques. “It’s exciting to see someone so young, a musician at his peak, also developing his skills as a photographer,” Dolan says.
The exhibition features a mix of black and white and color images, reflecting the evolution of McCartney’s photographic journey. It’s a rare opportunity to see the Fab Four through the lens of one of their own, offering a personal and intimate view of their early days.
“Paul McCartney Photographs 1963-64: Eyes of the Storm” will be on display at the Portland Art Museum until January 19, 2025.
