**Maiduguri, Borno State:** A devastating flood caused by the overflow of the Alau Dam has displaced over 414,000 people and claimed the lives of 30 in the Borno State capital, Maiduguri. The flood, described as the worst in 30 years, submerged 70% of the city, affecting major locations including the Shehu of Borno’s palace, the state secretariat, and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reported that over 23,000 households were affected by the rising waters following the rupture of the Alau dam on the Ngadda River. The flood also damaged houses, schools, commercial centers, and worship centers, as well as washing away 80% of animals at the Sanda Kyarimi Park zoo.
President Bola Tinubu expressed deep concern over the situation and ordered relevant agencies to expedite rescue efforts. Vice President Kashim Shettima visited Maiduguri to assess the damage firsthand. The Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, announced the distribution of N10,000 per household to flood victims and stated that the Federal Government allocated N3 billion for rehabilitation efforts.
Meanwhile, inmates escaped from the Maiduguri correctional facility after a portion of its perimeter fence collapsed due to the flood. While three escapees have been recaptured, a manhunt continues for the remaining fugitives.
Despite the efforts of the government to evacuate victims to IDP camps, some families chose to sleep on roads due to concerns about the camps’ safety. The Red Cross reported the harrowing tale of a family who sailed through the flood to a flyover for safety.
The water level has receded in some areas, raising hopes that the flood will subside soon. However, other parts of the country, including Bayelsa State, are also experiencing severe flooding, exacerbated by poor town planning and inadequate drainage.
The Federal Government has warned of the danger posed by rising water levels and is working with states to address the challenges of flooding and other natural disasters. President Tinubu has approved N3 billion for each state to tackle these issues.
The National Assembly has also pledged support for affected communities. As the situation evolves, authorities are working to provide immediate relief and long-term solutions for the victims of these devastating floods.
