**Pyongyang, North Korea:** North Korea has launched multiple short-range ballistic missiles into waters east of the Korean Peninsula, marking the first apparent weapons test since July 1st. The launches, which occurred on Thursday morning, came days after the North celebrated a key anniversary of the ruling regime’s founding.
Seoul’s Joint Chief of Staff confirmed the launches, reporting that the missiles were detected around 07:10 local time (2210 GMT on Wednesday) and launched from Pyongyang. The military is analyzing the details and sharing information with the U.S. and Japanese authorities, while increasing surveillance in preparation for potential further launches.
Japan’s defense ministry also confirmed the launch of at least one suspected North Korean ballistic missile, urging vessels to take caution.
This latest provocation follows a period of heightened tension between North and South Korea. North Korea recently announced the deployment of 250 ballistic missile launchers to its southern border and has been sending thousands of trash-filled balloons into South Korea in retaliation for propaganda balloons launched northwards by South Korean activists.
In response, Seoul has suspended a military agreement with Pyongyang and resumed propaganda broadcasts from loudspeakers along the border.
Experts believe North Korea may be testing and ramping up production of artillery and cruise missiles before sending them to Russia for use in the war in Ukraine. While Pyongyang denies supplying ammunition to Russia, the U.S. and South Korea have accused the North of supporting the Russian war effort.
The latest ballistic missile launch comes just weeks after South Korea and the United States completed their annual Ulchi Freedom Shield joint military drills, which North Korea routinely condemns as rehearsals for invasion.
Tensions on the Korean peninsula remain extremely high, with the North’s leader, Kim Jong Un, emphasizing the country’s commitment to strengthening its nuclear arsenal. The future of peace and stability on the peninsula remains uncertain.
