**Kolkata, India** – Mohun Bagan started their Indian Super League (ISL) campaign with a convincing 2-0 victory over defending champions Mumbai City FC in the opening match of the season.
The Mariners took the lead early in the match, with Mumbai City defender Tiri scoring an own goal in the 8th minute after a mistake by goalkeeper Phurba Lachenpa. Alberto Rodriguez then doubled the lead in the 30th minute following a corner kick, giving Mohun Bagan a comfortable advantage going into halftime.
Mumbai City had a goal disallowed for offside in the first half, and were unable to find a way back into the game despite the introduction of new signing Nikolaos Karelis. The defeat marks a disappointing start to the season for the defending champions.
The game also saw Mohun Bagan leave out star midfielder Sahal Abdul Samad, while Mumbai City fielded their new coach, Des Buckingham, for the first time.
