Thu Sep 12 10:35:54 UTC 2024: ## Wetherspoons Slashes Prices for Tax Equality Day
**London, UK -** In a bid to highlight the unfair tax burden on the hospitality industry, Wetherspoons is offering a 7.5% discount on all food and drink across the UK on Thursday, September 12th.
The discount, which applies automatically at the bar or on the Wetherspoons app, is part of the chain’s annual Tax Equality Day campaign. Founder and chairman, Tim Martin, argues that the 20% VAT on pub food and drink compared to the 0% VAT on supermarket alcohol creates an uneven playing field.
“Pubs have been under fantastic pressure for decades because of the tax disadvantages they have with supermarkets,” states a statement on the Wetherspoon website. “It doesn’t make sense for the hospitality industry to subsidise supermarkets.”
Martin is calling for a reduction of VAT to 12.5% to help ensure pubs, bars and restaurants thrive instead of closing down.
This offer is a great opportunity for thirsty punters to grab a discounted pint or meal at their local Wetherspoons. However, the discount is only available for a single day, after which prices will revert to normal.
Meanwhile, Wetherspoons has also opened a brand new pub at Waterloo Station, called “The Lion and the Unicorn”, offering a full food menu and breakfast options.
This latest move from Wetherspoons is sure to spark debate about the future of the hospitality industry and the need for fair taxation.
