Fri Sep 13 12:47:33 UTC 2024: ## Doctor’s Protest in Kolkata Enters Second Day as Demands Remain Unmet
**Kolkata, September 13, 2023:** Demonstrations by junior doctors in Kolkata entered their second day on Friday, following the state government’s failure to address their demands stemming from the alleged rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front has written to President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar, and Union Health Minister JP Nadda, urging their intervention.
The doctors are demanding the live-streaming of court proceedings in the case, a move the state government has resisted. On Thursday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee waited for over two hours for the protesters to meet with her but they refused, leading her to offer her resignation. She accused the doctors of wanting her “chair” instead of justice.
Meanwhile, the Enforcement Directorate conducted raids on several locations in Kolkata, investigating alleged financial misappropriation by the former principal of RG Kar Hospital.
The BJP’s CR Kesavan criticized Banerjee’s handling of the situation, calling for her resignation. The TMC’s Derek O’Brien, however, criticized the CBI for the delay in filing a chargesheet in the case.
The protests have disrupted healthcare services in the city, with doctors at other hospitals also joining in, citing a climate of insecurity. In a separate incident, a relative of a patient threatened a doctor at a private hospital, prompting further protests and calls for the accused’s arrest.
The situation remains tense, with a large police presence deployed to maintain order. The doctors are resolute in their demands and have indicated they will continue their agitation until they are met.
