Just days after being announced as the headliner for the 2025 Super Bowl Halftime Show, Kendrick Lamar has surprised fans with a new track, uploaded to his Instagram page without warning.
The five-minute song, which could be titled “Watch the Party Die” based on the chorus, is a departure from his recent work, and though it references his long-standing rivalry with Drake, it doesn’t appear to be a direct diss track.
Lamar raps about coming out on top, referencing a “tough love” approach, with lines like “Just walked that man down, that’ll do everyone a solid/ It’s love but tough love, sometimes you gotta result in violence.”
The unexpected release follows the NFL’s announcement that Lamar will be headlining the Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show in New Orleans on February 9th, 2025. In a statement, Lamar declared, “Rap music is still the most impactful genre to date. And I’ll be there to remind the world why. They got the right one.”
