**ALBUFEIRA, PORTUGAL -** A 29-year-old Irish man has been found dead in a police cell in Albufeira, Portugal, where he was being held following an alleged knife attack on his partner.
The man was arrested on Tuesday evening and detained overnight. Portuguese officials confirmed that he was found lifeless in his cell early Wednesday morning. Emergency services were called, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
While Portuguese officials have stated that there was no third-party involvement in the death, an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances. The National Republican Guard confirmed the man had been arrested after allegedly attacking his 29-year-old partner with a knife.
The couple had traveled to the Algarve region earlier this week for a social function. Gardaí (Irish police) are liaising with the man’s family and Portuguese officials regarding the incident.
The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed they are aware of the case and providing consular assistance. They have declined to comment further on the details of the case.
