Thu Sep 12 09:07:00 UTC 2024: ## Doubts Linger as Widodo Moves to New Capital Nusantara
**JAKARTA** – Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo will be spending the final weeks of his term in the country’s new capital, Nusantara, amid mounting concerns about the progress of the US$32 billion mega project. Despite the completion of key infrastructure like the presidential palace and the first hotel, Nusantara has faced numerous setbacks including construction delays, land disputes, and a lack of foreign investment.
This June, two top officials overseeing the project abruptly resigned, further adding to the doubts surrounding the project’s viability.
In a meeting with top military and police officials at the newly completed eagle-shaped palace, Widodo acknowledged that the project could take decades to finish. “It could take 10, 15 or even 20 years,” he stated.
Analysts believe the project’s pace may slow down under the new administration, led by President-elect Prabowo Subianto. Although Prabowo has pledged to continue Widodo’s policies, he is expected to prioritize his own “free nutritious food programme” for schoolchildren.
Despite the concerns, Widodo expressed confidence, stating that Prabowo has promised to expedite construction. However, the future of the project remains uncertain as it transitions into the new administration.
Located 1,200km from Jakarta on the eastern side of Borneo Island, Nusantara is intended to alleviate the burden on the congested and polluted current capital. However, the project’s slow progress and the upcoming shift in political leadership have raised questions about its long-term success.
On September 13th, Widodo is scheduled to hold his second Cabinet meeting at Nusantara and may announce new investments.
