Thu Sep 12 08:07:00 UTC 2024: ## Haryana Election: Family Feuds Take Center Stage as Parties Embrace Nepotism

Haryana’s upcoming assembly elections are witnessing a fierce battle for power, with political parties heavily relying on established political families to secure victory. While traditional factors like caste, community, and region remain influential, nepotism has taken center stage, dominating candidate lists.

Both the BJP and Congress are actively leveraging the influence of prominent families, including the legacies of Devi Lal, Chaudhary Bansi Lal, Bhajan Lal, and Bhupender Singh Hooda. This trend reflects a decades-long dominance of these families in Haryana politics, with inter-family rivalries adding another layer of intrigue to the election.

The Congress, aiming to wrest power from the BJP, has strategically chosen candidates from these influential families. Brijendra Singh, grandson of former CM Bansi Lal, has been given a ticket, along with the sons of MPs Jaiprakash JP and Randeep Surjewala.

Similarly, the BJP is heavily banking on these families to retain power. Shruti Chaudhary, daughter of Bansi Lal’s younger son, is contesting for the BJP, while Bhajan Lal’s grandson, Bhavya Bishnoi, is defending the family stronghold of Adampur.

The Chautala family, a prominent faction of the Devi Lal legacy, is engaged in a fierce internal battle. Eight members of the family are contesting, with nephews and cousins facing off against each other.

The Congress, meanwhile, has given 38 out of 45 tickets to close aides of former CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda, highlighting the influence of the Hooda family in the party.

While both parties claim to prioritize winning seats, the blatant reliance on family connections has raised concerns about nepotism and a lack of fresh talent. This strategy reflects a pragmatic approach, but also raises questions about the future of Haryana’s political landscape, highlighting a continued dependence on traditional power structures.
