**HANOI, VIETNAM** – The death toll from Typhoon Yagi and its subsequent landslides and flash floods has tragically reached 226, according to Vietnam’s disaster agency. The storm, the strongest to hit Asia this year, made landfall on Saturday along the country’s northeastern coast, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

While flood pressure has eased in the capital Hanoi, the city remains inundated, and thousands of residents were evacuated from areas near the swollen Red River, which reached its highest level in 20 years. “There’s a lot of heartbreak in the city,” said Skye Maconachie, co-CEO of Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation. “Many people who barely had anything have lost everything.”

North of Hanoi, landslides and severe floods continue to plague several areas, with residents grappling with the aftermath. “I never thought my house would be under water this deep,” said Hoang Van Ty, whose home in Thai Nguyen province was submerged. “My clothes and furniture were all under the water.”

The typhoon’s impact has also been felt in the province of Thai Nguyen, home to Samsung Electronics’ largest smartphone manufacturing plant in Vietnam. While flood waters have receded in some areas, residents are facing the daunting task of cleaning up and repairing damaged belongings, including motorbikes and electronics.

In Lao Cai province, authorities are desperately searching for 55 people who remain missing after a devastating flash flood swept through Nu Village on Tuesday, killing 46 and injuring 17. Over 300 soldiers and local officials are involved in the search and rescue efforts.

The landslides and floods have caused widespread agricultural damage, inundating over 200,000 hectares of rice and cash crop fields across northern Vietnam. The typhoon has also disrupted power supplies and caused damage to factories in Haiphong and Quang Ninh provinces, halting production.

Several countries, including Australia, Japan, South Korea and the United States, have pledged to provide aid to Vietnam as it struggles to recover from the devastating impact of Typhoon Yagi.
