Thu Sep 12 09:50:57 UTC 2024: ## Election Officials Warn of Postal Service Problems Threatening Voter Disenfranchisement

**TOPEKA, Kan. -** State and local election officials across the U.S. have expressed serious concerns about the potential for voter disenfranchisement in the upcoming presidential election due to ongoing problems with the nation’s mail system.

In a letter addressed to U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, officials from two national groups representing top election administrators in all 50 states warned that persistent deficiencies within the Postal Service threaten to disenfranchise voters. They cited instances where mailed ballots postmarked on time were received days after the deadline to be counted, and properly addressed election mail was returned as undeliverable.

The letter highlights that repeated attempts to resolve these issues with the Postal Service have been unsuccessful, suggesting a systemic problem beyond isolated incidents or specific facilities. The officials believe it points to a lack of understanding and enforcement of USPS policies among employees.

The U.S. Postal Service has not yet responded to requests for comment.
