Fri Sep 13 14:47:53 UTC 2024: ## Junior Doctors Appeal to President Murmu for Intervention in Kolkata Doctor Murder Case

**KOLKATA, INDIA** – Junior doctors in West Bengal have appealed to President Droupadi Murmu to intervene in the ongoing investigation of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The doctors, who have been protesting for justice, have refused to resume their duties until their demands are met.

In a four-page letter sent to President Murmu, the West Bengal Junior Doctors Front expressed their deep concern over the incident and the lack of progress in the investigation. They cited a “turbid atmosphere of fear, distrust and hopelessness,” which has forced them to work outside the hospital premises, fearing for their safety.

The letter, also sent to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, and Union Health Minister JP Nadda, stated that the junior doctors are “unable to discharge their duties without fear and apprehension” and called for President Murmu’s intervention to ensure justice for the victim and a safe working environment for healthcare professionals.

The doctors’ protest has led to a significant disruption in healthcare services, resulting in the deaths of 29 people. In response, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced a compensation of ₹2 lakh to the families of the deceased, stating that she is “only concerned about ordinary people getting medical service.”

While Banerjee has offered to resign, she has maintained that she wants justice for the victim. However, the doctors remain steadfast in their demand for a thorough investigation and a safe working environment. They have refused to meet with the Chief Minister until their demands are met.

The President’s response to the junior doctors’ appeal remains awaited. The situation in West Bengal continues to be tense, with the junior doctors’ protest and the state government’s response at a standstill.
