**New Delhi:** Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar launched a scathing attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi during a speech to Rajya Sabha interns at Parliament House on Thursday. While not naming him directly, Dhankhar condemned individuals holding constitutional posts who “become part of the enemies of the nation.”
Dhankhar’s remarks were a direct response to Gandhi’s recent statements during his visit to the United States, where he discussed issues like reservation and religious freedom in India. The Vice President accused Gandhi of lacking understanding of “Bharat, the Constitution, and national interest,” and argued that his comments were deeply disrespectful to the sacrifices made by those who fought for India’s freedom.
“Imagine, the ultimate sacrifice has been given by so many to achieve and protect this freedom, this nation,” Dhankhar declared. “Our brothers and sisters are in combat positions. Mothers have lost their sons, wives have lost their husbands. We cannot ridicule our nationalism!”
He went on to emphasize the importance of every Indian acting as an ambassador for the nation abroad, adding, “Nothing can be more condemnable, despicable and intolerable than that you become part of enemies of the nation!”
Dhankhar also stressed the sacred nature of the Constitution, highlighting the years of deliberation and debate that went into its creation. He condemned attempts to divide the nation, calling them “ignorance in extremity.”
Gandhi had previously clarified his stance on reservation, stating that the Congress would consider ending the system only when India achieves true fairness. He also reiterated his party’s commitment to exceeding the 50% quota limit.
The Vice President’s strong words have sparked further debate on the role of political leaders in promoting national unity and the importance of responsible rhetoric, particularly when speaking abroad.
