**ASABA -** Members of the Delta State House of Assembly are expressing discontent over the delay in the release of constituency project funds by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori. The issue has sparked tension between lawmakers from both the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC).
Lawmakers claim they have been waiting for the funds for a year since the Assembly was inaugurated. Some have reportedly begun using their personal funds to fulfill campaign promises made to their constituents.
“Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has not released constituency project funds to the lawmakers,” said an anonymous aide to the lawmakers. “This is very frustrating, and the lawmakers are not happy.”
While an aide to the Speaker confirmed that the issue resides with the Governor’s office, some reports indicate that certain lawmakers have received their allocations while others remain empty-handed.
Citizens of Ugheli North constituencies 1 and 2 have also expressed concern, urging the Governor to release the funds immediately. “You are not the first governor of Delta, nor will you be the last,” they stated. “The Delta Assembly has never been a one-party assembly, and even Okowa, your advisor, did not deprive opposition legislators of their benefits.”
Despite numerous attempts to reach the Commissioner for Information, Dr Ifeanyi Osuoza, and the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Festus Ahon, for comment, they remained unavailable.
The delay in releasing constituency project funds raises concerns about transparency and accountability in the state government’s financial dealings. It remains to be seen when and how the Governor will address the growing dissatisfaction amongst lawmakers and citizens alike.
