Thu Sep 12 01:15:23 UTC 2024: ## COVID-19 Activity Remains High Across the U.S., Driven by Wastewater Data
**Washington, D.C.** – Despite waning public concern, COVID-19 activity continues to be high in nearly half of the United States, according to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The CDC relies on wastewater data to track the virus, which often lags behind current case counts. Data collected between August 25 and August 31 shows that 23 states reported very high levels of wastewater viral activity. The most recent data, released on September 9th, also indicates that the KP.3.1.1 variant is accounting for a significant portion of positive infections, currently at 42.2%.
While the overall positivity rate slightly decreased by 0.4% from the previous week, reaching 16.3%, several regions continue to see fluctuations in cases. Region 6, comprised of six Southern states, reported the largest decrease in positive cases during the week of August 25-31.
The CDC emphasizes the importance of staying vigilant and seeking medical attention if experiencing severe symptoms, such as difficulty breathing, chest pain, or confusion.
The public is urged to stay informed about the latest updates on COVID-19 activity in their area and to take preventative measures like vaccination, wearing masks, and practicing good hygiene to protect themselves and their communities.
