In a move to ensure safety and security, the 2024 Presidential Election Electoral Vote Certification process on January 6, 2025 – the anniversary of the January 6th, 2021 Capitol attack – has been designated a National Special Security Event (NSSE). This designation, granted by the Department of Homeland Security, signifies a heightened level of security measures, including increased officer presence, expanded security perimeters, and technology to detect weapons of mass destruction.
The decision comes after recommendations from Congressional reports, including the House Select Committee investigating the January 6th attack. The US Secret Service, who manages security for NSSE events, cited these reports as justification for the designation.
The US Capitol Police have been planning for this event since the 2020 attack, with a significant increase in planning and exercises over the past year. Agencies are still in the early stages of determining specific security measures but are collaborating with local and federal law enforcement partners to ensure a comprehensive and integrated security plan.
The NSSE designation is typically reserved for events of national significance, such as presidential inaugurations, the Super Bowl, and the NATO summit. The security plans for the 2025 Electoral Vote Certification are designed to protect participants and prevent any repeat of the events that unfolded on January 6th, 2021.
