**VICTORIA** – Coastal GasLink Pipeline Ltd. has been fined $590,000 by British Columbia’s Environment Assessment Office for violations during the construction of its pipeline across the province. The penalties, totaling 10 administrative fines, were levied due to non-compliance with the company’s environmental assessment certificate.
The fines were imposed following inspections in April and May 2023, which uncovered problems with erosion and sediment control measures along the pipeline route. The Environment Assessment Office stated that the latest penalties reflect an escalation of enforcement due to repeated non-compliance.
Prior to this, Coastal GasLink had already received four previous penalties totaling almost $800,000 for failing to control erosion and sediment. Additionally, a $6,000 fine was issued for providing false or misleading information.
The Environment Assessment Office prioritized inspections of the 670-kilometer pipeline route by air and ground, leading to 59 warnings and 13 stop-work orders. Despite these measures, the pipeline has now been completed.
