Thu Sep 12 15:36:00 UTC 2024: ## Cinnamon Spice Crisis: Consumer Reports Finds High Lead Levels in Popular Brands

**New York, NY** – A new investigation by Consumer Reports has revealed concerning levels of lead in popular cinnamon powder and spice blends, raising serious health concerns for consumers.

The study tested 36 ground cinnamon products and spice blends, finding that 12 contained lead levels exceeding 1 ppm, the threshold for recalls in New York.

**Paras cinnamon powder** topped the list with the highest lead level at 3.52 ppm, followed by **Mimi’s Products ground cinnamon** and **ShopRite Bowl & Basket ground cinnamon**.

Other brands with elevated lead levels include **EGN cinnamon powder**, **Rani Brand ground cinnamon**, **Zara Foods cinnamon powder**, **Three Rivers cinnamon stick powder**, **Yu Yee Brand five spice powder**, **BaiLiFeng five spice powder**, **Spicy King five spice powder**, and **Badia cinnamon powder**.

In response to these findings, **Paras** and **EGN** have announced they will cease sales and remove the affected products from stores.

Consumer Reports deemed only six brands safe for regular use, including **365 Whole Foods Market organic ground cinnamon**, **Loisa organic cinnamon**, **Morton & Bassett San Francisco 100% organic ground cinnamon**, **Sadaf cinnamon powder**, and **365 Whole Foods Market ground cinnamon**.

Lead exposure is a serious health hazard, with no safe level considered acceptable by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Lead accumulates in the body over time, posing significant risks to children’s development and overall health.

The World Health Organization estimates that lead exposure led to nearly a million deaths in 2019 and continues to have lasting health impacts.

This news comes after a series of food recalls earlier this year, including several cinnamon brands, cantaloupes, cucumbers, and eggs, highlighting ongoing concerns about food safety.

Consumer Reports urges consumers to check their spice cabinets and discard any affected products. They recommend choosing cinnamon and spice blends from brands that have been tested and deemed safe.
