Fri Sep 13 03:47:41 UTC 2024: ## Political Row Erupts Over PM Modi’s Visit to CJI’s Ganesh Puja
A political storm has brewed over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud’s residence to attend a Ganesh Puja on Thursday. While the BJP defended the event as a symbol of unity and celebration, the Opposition raised concerns about the meeting’s impact on the judiciary’s independence.
The controversy was sparked by Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut, who expressed fears that the meeting might influence the ongoing Maharashtra case being heard by CJI Chandrachud. He alleged that the PM’s presence could jeopardize the case’s fairness, as the BJP is a party to the legal proceedings.
Other Opposition leaders echoed these concerns, questioning the timing of the visit and its implications for the judiciary’s impartiality, especially given the upcoming Maharashtra elections.
The BJP, however, countered the allegations, reminding the Opposition of former PM Manmohan Singh’s invitations to then CJI KG Balakrishnan for Iftar parties in 2009. They argued that the Opposition had not expressed any concerns about the judiciary’s independence then.
Union Minister Bhupendra Yadav condemned the Opposition’s attempts to politicize the event, highlighting the importance of celebrating festivals together. He stressed that the occasion symbolized the unity and harmony of Indian society.
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, while acknowledging the CJI’s right to invite guests, criticized the PM’s decision to publicize the meeting, stating it was ill-timed and unnecessarily fuelled speculation. He urged both parties to refrain from such public displays, especially in the context of upcoming elections.
The controversy has once again highlighted the delicate balance between the independence of the judiciary and the political landscape. While some see the event as a harmless celebration, others worry about the potential for undue influence and compromised justice. The coming days will likely see further debate on this issue as political tensions escalate.
