**DIBRUGARH, Sept 11:** The All Adivasi Students’ Association of Assam (AASAA) staged a protest in front of the Dibrugarh District Commissioner’s Office on Wednesday, demanding recognition and rights for the Adivasi community of the state.
The protesters’ key demands included the granting of Scheduled Tribes (ST) status to Assam’s Adivasi population, securing land rights for Adivasi people living in tea gardens, forests, and villages, ensuring correct caste certificates for educational opportunities, and a significant increase in the minimum daily wage for tea garden workers.
AASAA highlighted the rising cost of living and challenging working conditions for tea workers, advocating for a hike in their daily wage from Rs 250 to Rs 550.
Following the protest, a memorandum signed by AASAA Dibrugarh district president Siba Kurmi and general secretary Monuj Oraon was submitted to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma through the district commissioner.
The protest underscores the Adivasi community’s ongoing struggle for recognition and a better future in Assam.
