**Suva, Fiji -** The annual Jack Akbar Shield golf tournament, held in memory of the late golf enthusiast Jack Akbar, commenced yesterday at the Fiji Golf Club. This year’s event saw a record participation of 64 golfers, including 14 from Australia.

The tournament, established in 2015, has grown in popularity each year, reflecting Akbar’s enduring legacy in the golfing community. Susan Yee, secretary of the Fiji Senior Golfers Association, expressed enthusiasm about the growing number of participants.

Akbar, a well-respected figure in Fiji, was born in Suva in 1929 and was known for his active lifestyle, embracing various sports activities. He founded Akbar Engineering Ltd in 1974 and remained dedicated to staying active, particularly through golf, despite facing health challenges. Beyond sports, Akbar was also actively involved in numerous social and community organizations, earning an MBE from the Queen in 1987 for his contributions.

The Jack Akbar Shield tournament is a testament to Akbar’s dedication to the sport and his lasting impact on the community. This year’s event features a stroke event, with the winner determined by the lowest nett score. Alongside the main prize, sponsors are providing additional awards and refreshments for the participants.

The tournament has become a highly anticipated event on the Seniors Calendar, serving as a tribute to the life and legacy of a remarkable individual who left a lasting impression on the golfing community in Fiji.
