Fri Sep 13 16:57:35 UTC 2024: ## Port Blair Renamed Sri Vijaya Puram: A Step Towards Erasing Colonial Legacy

**Port Blair**, the capital of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, has been renamed **Sri Vijaya Puram**. The decision, announced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, is aimed at removing the “colonial imprint” from the country.

The previous name, Port Blair, was given after Captain Archibald Blair, a British colonial naval officer of the East India Company. Shah emphasized that the renaming is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to liberate India from colonial remnants.

“Sri Vijaya Puram” signifies the victory achieved in India’s freedom struggle and symbolizes the islands’ contribution to the independence movement. The islands played a vital role as a naval base during the Chola Empire and have historically been a crucial location for the nation’s security and development.

The minister also highlighted the islands’ significance in the freedom struggle, mentioning the hoisting of the Indian flag by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and the sacrifices of freedom fighters like Veer Savarkar at the Cellular Jail.

This renaming adds to a series of similar initiatives taken by the government to erase colonial legacies. In 2021, Rajpath was renamed Kartavya Path, a move described by Prime Minister Modi as the eradication of a symbol of slavery.

The decision to rename Port Blair has been met with mixed reactions. Some view it as a necessary step to break free from colonial past, while others question the need to rewrite history. The debate on re-naming places with colonial links continues, reflecting the complex legacy of British rule in India.
