Thu Sep 12 05:36:57 UTC 2024: ## Strathmore Cemetery Bylaw Discussions Postponed, Parish Involvement Sought

**Strathmore, AB** – The Town of Strathmore council has decided to postpone further discussions on the proposed Cemetery Bylaw 24-21 until a future meeting. This decision was made during the regular council meeting on Sept. 4, following public feedback and deliberations.

Council also directed town administration to formally engage with the Sacred Heart Parish regarding the potential acquisition and operation of the Catholic section of the Strathmore Cemetery. This aligns with the provisions of the Cemeteries Act.

Further, town administration has been tasked with providing the Sacred Heart Parish with relevant documents, including correspondence and meeting recordings related to the proposed bylaw. This move aims to ensure the parish has a comprehensive understanding of feedback received from local Catholic church members on their preferred grieving practices.

The decision to defer discussions and engage the parish comes after council received public input and considered various amendments and recommendations regarding the bylaw. The proposed bylaw aimed to replace the outdated Cemetery Bylaw 14-16, addressing issues such as changing interment methods and ensuring financial sustainability of cemetery operations.

The town has identified challenges related to cemetery maintenance, including grave decorations impeding upkeep and potential safety concerns.

A specific date for the return of the bylaw to council for further discussion has not yet been set. More information about the bylaw is available on the Town of Strathmore’s public meeting agenda for Sept. 4 and through the recorded meeting on their YouTube channel.
