Thu Sep 12 03:35:59 UTC 2024: ## K-pop Reigns Supreme as Taylor Swift Ties Beyoncé’s VMA Record
The 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, held at UBS Arena in New York on Wednesday, saw Taylor Swift and Eminem make history while K-pop continued its dominance.
Swift won seven awards, bringing her total Moonperson count to 30, tying her with Beyoncé as the show’s most awarded artist. Eminem, with two awards, surpassed Peter Gabriel to become the most awarded male artist in VMA history.
While expected wins for Swift, Eminem, and SZA fueled the night, some surprises emerged. Despite receiving four nominations each, Madonna, Eminem, and GloRilla were all snubbed, including for Madonna’s iconic “Like a Virgin” performance from the inaugural 1984 show.
K-pop, however, continued its winning streak with Seventeen taking home the Best Group award. This marks the sixth consecutive year a K-pop group has won the all-genre category, solidifying its global impact.
Other notable surprises included Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso” winning Song of the Year over Taylor Swift’s “Fortnight” and Benson Boone’s “Beautiful Things” claiming Best Alternative, despite its multi-genre appeal.
The night also saw a strong showing for female artists across various categories, including Best New Artist, Video for Good, Song of the Year, and Best Latin.
