Thu Sep 12 17:57:19 UTC 2024: ## Stalwart Communist Leader Sitaram Yechury Passes Away at 72

**New Delhi, India** – Sitaram Yechury, a towering figure in Indian politics and the former General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), passed away on Tuesday at the age of 72. Yechury, a staunch Marxist, dedicated his life to the party and shaped the Indian political landscape for over five decades.

Born in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh in 1947, Yechury’s political journey began at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), where he was deeply involved in student activism. He became a prominent figure during the Emergency (1975-77), leading protests against the government and facing arrest for his unwavering commitment to his cause.

Yechury’s career was marked by significant achievements, including serving as President of the JNU Students’ Union three times and leading a protest that forced Indira Gandhi to resign as Chancellor of JNU. He consistently championed Marxist principles, fighting against the Emergency and later, the rising tide of communal forces in India.

As General Secretary of the CPIM from 2015 to 2022, Yechury navigated a changing political landscape. He advocated for flexible alliances with non-communist parties to counter the BJP’s influence, a departure from his predecessor’s strict adherence to ideological purity.

His interactions with the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) were marked by a more conciliatory approach compared to his predecessor’s confrontational stance. This approach brought him closer to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, with whom he shared beliefs in social justice.

Yechury’s vision for the CPIM involved modernizing the party and expanding its appeal, often clashing with traditional Marxist approaches. Despite these differences, his ability to navigate complex political landscapes while staying true to his principles defined his legacy.

Yechury’s passing marks the end of an era for the CPIM, leaving the party to navigate new political challenges and decide its future direction.
