JAMESTOWN, ND – The Jamestown Rural Fire Department held a Patriot Day remembrance ceremony on Wednesday, Sept. 11, at Zonta Park to honor the victims of the 9/11 attacks and the subsequent global war on terror.
Fire Chief Brian Paulson, who addressed the estimated 100 attendees including first responders, veterans, and community members, reminded everyone of the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001, and the heavy toll it took on the nation.
Paulson detailed the attacks, including the hijacking of four commercial airplanes, the crashes at the World Trade Center towers and the Pentagon, and the heroic attempt to regain control of the fourth plane that crashed in Pennsylvania. He also noted the staggering number of casualties, with 2,996 confirmed deaths, thousands injured, and long-term health effects stemming from the attacks.
Paulson emphasized the sacrifice of those who responded to the tragedy, particularly the 343 members of the Fire Department New York and 71 New York Police Department and Port Authority officers who lost their lives. He also highlighted the global impact of the attacks, with victims from at least 102 countries.
The ceremony included a prayer by Rev. Chad Wilhelm, recognition of first responders and veterans’ organizations, the playing of the Star Spangled Banner and taps, and a Freedom Walk around the city.
Paulson also acknowledged the sacrifices of the military personnel deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq since 2001, including nearly 3,800 North Dakota National Guard soldiers and airmen. He expressed gratitude for those who continue to serve and urged community support for veterans and first responders struggling with the effects of PTSD.
Paulson concluded his remarks by calling on everyone to remember the sacrifices made on 9/11 and to honor those who died in the ensuing wars. He encouraged community members to serve their neighbors and contribute to their communities, reflecting the spirit of selflessness and heroism that emerged in the aftermath of the attacks.
The ceremony served as a poignant reminder of the importance of remembrance, honoring those who lost their lives, and supporting those who continue to serve and protect our country.
