Wed Sep 11 09:24:34 UTC 2024: ## Australian Breaker Tops World Rankings Despite Olympic Flop

Australian breaker Rachael “Raygun” Gunn, despite her underwhelming performance at the Paris Olympics, has topped the latest world rankings, sparking controversy and debate within the breaking community.

The World DanceSport Federation (WDSF) issued a statement explaining the ranking system, which relies on athletes’ top four performances within the past 12 months. Crucially, the Olympics and qualifier events are excluded from these rankings, resulting in Gunn’s top ranking based solely on her October 2023 Oceania continental championship win.

This unusual situation has led to criticism from members of the breaking community, who argue the current rankings don’t accurately reflect the sport’s culture and performance levels. Zack Slusser, vice president of Breaking for Gold USA, states the WDSF lacks credibility within the breaking community and its events lack the “vibe” and “community” found in prestigious international competitions like Red Bull BC One.

The WDSF acknowledges the current ranking system is based on limited data due to the unusual competition schedule this year, and promises the rankings will be recalibrated with the upcoming Breaking for Gold World Series in October. However, the controversy highlights the ongoing tension between the governing body and the breaking community, emphasizing the need for greater collaboration and transparency in shaping the future of the sport.
