Two years after the tragic death of their son Takayo Nembhard, known as TKorStretch in the Bristol music scene, Sandra and Vincent Nembhard are calling for justice and stronger security measures at the Notting Hill Carnival.
Takayo, 21, was fatally stabbed at the 2022 carnival. Despite the arrest of eight suspects, all have been released under investigation. The family expresses deep frustration with the lack of progress in the investigation, fearing that the lack of accountability will lead to further violence.
Their concerns are not unfounded. This year’s carnival saw a horrifying repeat of violence with eight stabbings, one of which resulted in death. The Nembhards warn that their son’s murder was a preventable tragedy. “We told the police if they don’t find the people who murdered our son and charge them, this could happen again,” Vincent Nembhard stated.
The family, who are still mourning their son’s loss, are also grieving the deaths of Cher Maximen and Mussie Imnetu, who also lost their lives at this year’s carnival. “We know it’s not easy because we are going through the same pain,” Vincent Nembhard said in a video message to the families of the victims.
While the Metropolitan Police have stated that the investigation into Takayo’s death is ongoing, the Nembhards are calling for swift action. They are urging the authorities to implement stronger security measures, such as metal detectors at the carnival’s entrance, and stricter penalties for knife crimes.
“We love carnival, it’s part of our culture,” Vincent Nembhard says, “but there are a few bad apples that are going in and spoiling it for everyone.”
The Nembhards are determined to keep their son’s memory alive, releasing his music and hosting events in his honor. But they also vow to continue fighting for justice for their son and to prevent further tragedies at the carnival. “We’re not going to give up,” Sandra Nembhard said. “We need justice for our son, and we don’t want to see anyone else get hurt.”
The family is urging anyone with information about Takayo’s murder to come forward.
