**Kyankwanzi, Uganda** – A 30-year-old man, Ronald Ssemanda, has been arrested for allegedly beating his mother and brother to death in a brutal attack on Monday evening. Ssemanda, who is believed to be mentally ill, is accused of using a large cassava stem to strike his victims, 46-year-old Sylvia Namaganda and 24-year-old Robert Ssenyonga.
The incident occurred at the home of Reverend David Ssejjemba, a parish priest in Kiyuni village, where Ssemanda had been taken by his family in June for deliverance prayers to address his mental health issues.
According to Wamala Region Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala, Ssemanda attacked his brother first, fatally striking him on the head. He then turned on his mother, inflicting similar fatal injuries.
Ssenyonga died at the scene, while Namaganda succumbed to her injuries upon arrival at a nearby clinic.
Police, who recovered the cassava stem as evidence, apprehended Ssemanda at the scene and transported him to Kyankwanzi police station. He is currently undergoing a medical examination to determine his mental state as part of the ongoing murder investigation.
Venah Nyombi, a former parish councillor in Makulubita sub-county, expressed the shock and grief felt by the family and the entire community over the tragedy.
