Despite securing their first win of the season against Nicholls State on Saturday, the LSU Tigers didn’t impress with a sluggish performance against the FCS opponent. The game remained tight into the second half before the Tigers finally pulled away. While the victory is recorded, the lackluster performance has caused LSU to fall to No. 9 in On3’s SEC power rankings, dropping them out of the top half of the standings.
The primary concern for LSU is the struggling run game, a surprising development considering the high expectations for the offensive line. Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, who threw for 302 yards and six touchdowns in the win, has played well, but the lack of a consistent rushing attack limits the offense’s potential. Coach Brian Kelly acknowledged the issue and stated that the coaching staff needs to find a way to improve the run game.
The defense also remains a concern, especially after the season-ending Achilles injury to defensive tackle Jacobian Guillory. The Tigers will need to find answers on both sides of the ball if they want to achieve their goals this season.
