Thu Sep 12 15:57:37 UTC 2024: ## Mumbai Indians’ Chawla Defends Hardik Pandya’s Captaincy Despite Poor Season
**Mumbai, India -** Former Mumbai Indians leg-spinner Piyush Chawla defended Hardik Pandya’s captaincy despite the team’s disastrous performance in the IPL 2024. While acknowledging that the team’s performance fell short, Chawla attributed it to a lack of momentum and bad luck rather than any failings in Pandya’s leadership.
Chawla, who played under both Rohit Sharma and Pandya, emphasized that each captain has a distinct style. He pointed to specific instances where the team narrowly missed out on crucial wins, suggesting that it was a matter of luck rather than a lack of leadership. He referenced a match where KKR almost lost due to a close call and another where Karn Sharma missed a crucial catch.
“It’s definitely about momentum and, in that, picking things, clicking things,” said Chawla. “Rohit’s way is different, Mahi bhai’s way is different, Hardik’s way is different, Surya’s way is different.”
While acknowledging that the fans’ booing of Pandya may have impacted the team’s morale, Chawla maintained that the team’s struggles were not due to the captaincy change. “It makes a little impact when fans boo you,” he said. “He told me it doesn’t matter because Hardik is such a character that he can neglect all these things. But it was happening so much that we were feeling bad as a team.”
Despite the poor results, Chawla maintained that the team environment remained positive under Pandya. He described Pandya as a strong individual who remained focused despite the negative reactions he faced.
Mumbai Indians finished last in the IPL 2024, failing to qualify for the playoffs for the first time. This marked a significant change from their previous dominance under Rohit Sharma, who led the team to five IPL titles.
