Tue Sep 10 17:07:45 UTC 2024: ## Vice President Harris’ Past Stances on Transgender Surgeries and ICE Funding Come Under Scrutiny

**Washington, D.C.** – As the 2024 presidential campaign heats up, Vice President Kamala Harris’ past positions on issues like immigration, transgender rights, and policing have come under renewed scrutiny.

Harris, currently running with President Biden for re-election, has faced criticism for her previous support of funding transgender surgeries for illegal immigrants and defunding Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

In a 2019 questionnaire by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Harris stated her support for ending immigration detention facilities, eliminating the use of ICE detainers, and using taxpayer funds to cover the costs of gender transition surgeries for illegal immigrants.

During a recent interview on ABC News Live, Harris-Walz campaign communications director Michael Tyler refused to walk back these statements, calling them a “complete distraction” from the current political landscape. He emphasized that voters are more concerned with border security, a topic on which Harris is presenting herself as a strong contender.

While Harris has since attempted to rebrand herself as a tough-on-the-border candidate, her past stances on immigration have been a source of controversy. She previously supported granting healthcare coverage to illegal immigrants, compared ICE to the Ku Klux Klan, and called for its abolishment.

In addition to immigration, Harris’ stance on transgender rights has also been brought into question. She previously defended the California Department of Corrections’ attempts to deny transgender surgeries for inmates, but later stated in the ACLU questionnaire that she believes “transition treatment is a medical necessity” and would ensure federal agencies provide it.

Harris has also faced criticism for her previous support of the “Defund the Police” movement, which gained traction following the death of George Floyd in 2020. While she initially called for more focus on community-based solutions to crime, her campaign later clarified that she does not support defunding police departments.

Despite these past statements, Harris is now trying to appeal to a wider range of voters, presenting herself as a moderate candidate. However, her past positions continue to be a point of contention for her critics, highlighting the shifting political landscape and the challenges of navigating evolving policy positions.
