**HALF MOON BAY, Calif. (KGO)** – Just minutes before a planned strike, teachers in the Cabrillo Unified School District have reached a tentative agreement with the district, averting a walkout that would have disrupted classes for thousands of students. The deal, announced at 11:58 p.m. Wednesday, includes a 6% raise for teachers retroactive to July 2022, full health insurance coverage for teachers, and a $100 monthly stipend towards family benefits.
Superintendent Lee-Alva expressed elation at the agreement, stating it not only provides teachers with a well-deserved pay increase and improved benefits but also reinforces the district’s commitment to creating a positive and supportive environment for staff and students.
Teachers, who had been preparing to strike Thursday morning, had voiced concerns over stagnant wages and the rising cost of living. According to the union, they had not received a cost of living raise since the 2021-2022 school year.
“I was talking with a parent this morning and I just lost it, because it’s not what we want for our students,” said El Granada Elementary teacher Annette Angeles-Hagarty, fighting back tears. “I feel like I’m just getting to know my students, I’m connecting with them… I have 4-year-olds in TK.”
The agreement still requires approval by union members and the school board before it becomes official. However, the last-minute breakthrough has brought a sense of relief to both teachers and students, ensuring a continued educational experience without disruption.
