The Board of Deputies has announced a comprehensive three-year plan, “A Brighter Future for the UK Jewish Community,” outlining its goals to address key issues facing the community.
The plan, driven by newly elected President Phil Rosenberg and his team, features five key focus areas:
* **Combating Antisemitism:** The Board will actively combat antisemitism and promote understanding across communities.
* **Promoting Peace and Security in the Middle East:** The plan emphasizes supporting peace efforts and advocating for the security of Israel.
* **Defending Jewish Religious Freedoms:** The Board will work to ensure the freedom and safety of Jewish religious practices.
* **Building a More United and Inclusive Community:** The plan highlights initiatives to foster unity and inclusivity within the Jewish community, particularly addressing concerns about the lack of women in leadership roles.
* **Celebrating British Jewish Heritage and Culture:** The Board intends to celebrate and promote British Jewish heritage, including a proposed “British Jewish Culture Month” and a heritage plaque scheme to commemorate significant events and individuals.
The plan also includes a dedicated Gender Equality scheme in response to the absence of women among the newly elected honorary officers. This initiative seeks to address concerns about the “laddish” and “boorish” culture within the Board, aiming to create a more inclusive environment for all members.
“Our community finds itself at an inflection point, but we have resilience in our DNA, and I am determined that we will come back stronger,” said Rosenberg. “We look forward to working with deputies and all parts of our community towards a brighter future.”
The plan is intended to guide the Board’s activities through 2025, a year marking significant anniversaries including the 80th anniversary of the end of the Shoah and World War II.
