**LONDON** – US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Tuesday declared that he will demand “fundamental changes” to Israeli operations in the occupied West Bank, following the death of American citizen Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, who was killed by Israeli fire during a protest against settlements.
Blinken stated that the US will raise Eygi’s death with Israeli officials at the highest levels, expressing deep concern over the incident. An investigation and eyewitness accounts have concluded that her killing was “unprovoked and unjustified,” Blinken stated, adding that “no one should be shot and killed for attending a protest.”
This incident marks the second death of a US citizen at the hands of Israeli security forces, with Blinken emphasizing that “it’s not acceptable. It has to change.”
Blinken also raised concerns about the lack of consequences for Israeli settlers who have attacked Palestinians in the West Bank, amidst the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
Eygi, a dual Turkish-American citizen, was killed while participating in a weekly demonstration against Israeli settlements, which are deemed illegal under international law but supported by right-wing members of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government.
The Israeli military initially claimed Eygi was killed indirectly and unintentionally by IDF fire aimed at a “key instigator of the riot.” However, Eygi’s family vehemently rejected this account, stating that she was shot in the head while taking shelter in an olive grove.
The United Nations’ human rights office confirmed that Eygi was killed by a “shot in the head,” corroborating the family’s statement.
Amidst the ongoing conflict, Blinken also acknowledged the need for a ceasefire in Gaza, stating that a deal would benefit all sides and “turn down the temperature.” However, he acknowledged significant differences remain between the parties.
The US has faced criticism for its continued support of Israel despite concerns over the deaths of US citizens. While the State Department has stated that Israel has taken remedial action in some cases, it has faced pressure to take a stronger stance against the use of lethal force against American citizens.
