Tue Sep 10 16:20:57 UTC 2024: ## Biden Slaps New Sanctions on Iran Over Arms Shipments to Russia

**WASHINGTON** – The Biden administration has announced new sanctions against Iran on Tuesday, targeting individuals and entities involved in the delivery of rockets to Russia for use against Ukraine. The sanctions come after years of bipartisan pressure to increase financial pressure on Tehran.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned Iran that providing weapons to the Kremlin would be “a dramatic escalation” in global tensions over the war. The White House spokesman, John Kirby, stated that the sanctions will target individuals and companies involved in the arms delivery, including Iran Air, a state-owned passenger and cargo carrier, and Iranian government officials.

The US action coincides with a joint announcement by France, Germany, and the UK to suspend certain commercial ties with Iran. The US and its allies are expected to announce further measures against Iran in the coming days.

The sanctions are a direct response to Russia’s reported receipt of Iranian Fateh-360 close-range ballistic missiles, which are expected to be deployed against Ukraine within weeks. Russia is said to have received training from Iran on the missile system.

The move comes amidst ongoing tensions between the US and Iran, with former President Donald Trump accusing the Biden administration of failing to curb Iranian aggression by loosening enforcement of oil sanctions.

While the US had previously agreed to release $6 billion in frozen Iranian oil proceeds, this agreement was paused after Iran-backed Hamas terrorists attacked Israel in October 2023.

The US action is aimed at deterring further Iranian support for Russia’s war in Ukraine and is expected to have a significant impact on Iran’s economy, particularly its oil exports. The move could also contribute to rising global oil prices.
