**Sydney, Australia** – Rachael ‘Raygun’ Gunn, the Australian breakdancer who garnered attention for her zero-point performance at the Paris Olympics, has unexpectedly landed the top spot in the World DanceSport Federation’s (WDSF) female ranking.
Gunn’s performance at the Games, the first to include breaking, sparked debate due to her receiving a score of zero. However, the WDSF has clarified that the current ranking system, due to unique circumstances surrounding the Olympics, is based on a limited number of competition results.
The WDSF statement explained that ranking events were intentionally paused between December 2023 and the Olympics to allow athletes to focus solely on qualification. As a result, many athletes now have only one competition result contributing to their ranking, leading to some unusual placements.
Raygun, who is currently ranked number one, will hold her position until the end of October when her points expire. Following her performance in Paris, Gunn has decided to step away from competition for the time being. She explained that she is looking to reclaim breaking as a source of joy and freedom, stating, “It’s been my medicine, and then it turned into my source of stress. So, I’m really happy that it gets to go back to being my medicine.”
While Gunn’s top ranking may be a result of a unique situation, it highlights the complexity of the ranking system in a rapidly developing sport. The WDSF’s statement acknowledges these complexities and the need for ongoing communication and transparency surrounding ranking methodology.
