Thu Sep 12 12:21:48 UTC 2024: ## Ayushman Bharat Expands to Cover All Senior Citizens Over 70

**New Delhi:** The Indian government has taken a significant step towards bolstering public healthcare by expanding the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) to include all citizens aged 70 years and above. This move removes income-level restrictions, effectively offering health insurance coverage to a vast segment of the elderly population.

The scheme provides a ₹5 lakh annual health insurance coverage per family, providing much-needed financial relief to senior citizens who often face significant healthcare costs. The expansion is expected to cover an additional 6 crore individuals from over 4.5 crore families.

“This is crucial as India witnesses a shift towards nuclear families, where the financial burden on elderly individuals is more pronounced,” explained Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

Each eligible senior citizen will receive a unique health card, streamlining access to healthcare benefits. However, the ₹5 lakh coverage is shared within families, meaning if multiple senior citizens are part of the same family, the amount will be divided amongst them.

The government estimates an initial cost of ₹3,437 crore for this expansion, with states covering 40% of the expenses. Hilly and northeastern states will receive 90% central funding.

Senior citizens already enrolled in other public health insurance schemes like CGHS, ECHS, or Ayushman CAPF must choose between their existing plan and the expanded AB PM-JAY. Those with private insurance or under the Employees’ State Insurance Scheme can opt for this new coverage without any conflict.

The expansion, particularly catering to a growing elderly population, is likely to incur higher costs compared to covering younger, economically weaker sections of the population.

This move marks a significant step towards strengthening the social security net for senior citizens in India, aiming to alleviate their healthcare burdens and improve their overall well-being.
