Tue Sep 10 17:09:56 UTC 2024: ## Germany Sees Sharp Drop in Ukrainian Refugee Protection Status Amid Criticism

**Berlin, Germany** – The number of Ukrainian refugees holding temporary protection status in Germany has plummeted by over 230,000 in just one month, according to new data from Eurostat. This decline comes amid growing criticism of the German government’s generous treatment of Ukrainian refugees, with some arguing that it discourages integration and work.

As of July, Germany hosted the highest number of Ukrainians with temporary protection status in the EU, at over 1.1 million. The significant drop, according to Eurostat, is attributed to both Ukrainians losing their status due to recategorization and those leaving the country.

The German government has provided substantial support to Ukrainian refugees, including a monthly “citizen’s benefit” of €563, significantly higher than other EU countries and typically reserved for low-income German citizens. This generous support has drawn criticism from opposition parties, who argue it discourages Ukrainians from seeking employment.

Data shows that only 20% of Ukrainian refugees in Germany are currently employed, the lowest rate compared to other host nations.

The conservative Christian Social Union (CSU) has called for a review of the welfare policies and greater pressure on refugees to find work. Some even advocate for deportations of those refusing to integrate.

Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann has also raised the controversial issue of encouraging draft-eligible Ukrainian men to return to their country.

The German government faces a delicate balance in its approach to Ukrainian refugees. While providing support is crucial, critics argue that the current system may be hindering integration and potentially fueling tensions within the country.
