Rockstar Games, the developers behind the Grand Theft Auto franchise, have found themselves in hot water after offering a paltry $7,500 to use the hit song “Temptation” by British synth-pop group Heaven 17 in the upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI.
Martyn Ware, founding member of Heaven 17, took to Twitter to express his outrage at the “buyout” offer, pointing out the immense success of the Grand Theft Auto franchise, with GTA V alone selling nearly 200 million copies and generating over $8 billion in revenue.
“Naturally excited about the immense wealth that was about to head my way,” Ware sarcastically wrote, “I scrolled to the bottom of the email re the offer…IT WAS $7500—for a buyout of any future royalties from the game – forever…”
Ware’s response has sparked a debate about the fair compensation for artists whose work is featured in popular games, particularly in light of the massive revenue generated by titles like Grand Theft Auto. The incident highlights the ongoing struggle for artists to receive fair royalties and residuals, especially when their work contributes to the success of multi-billion dollar franchises.
While the “exposure” that “Temptation” might have gained from being included in GTA VI is undeniable, the potential for actual increased sales or streams is unclear.
Fans eagerly await the release of Grand Theft Auto VI, scheduled for the second half of 2024. However, the controversy surrounding the game’s music licensing practices may cast a shadow on its launch, raising questions about the fairness of the industry’s treatment of artists.
