**Northern Maine is set to become home to the world’s largest battery, boasting a storage capacity of 8,500 megawatt-hours.** This groundbreaking project, spearheaded by Form Energy, will utilize a unique “reverse rusting” process to store renewable energy from sources like solar and wind. The battery system will serve as a crucial tool for ensuring consistent energy supply even when the sun isn’t shining and the wind isn’t blowing.
The technology works by leveraging iron. As the battery stores electricity, it absorbs oxygen from the air, transforming the iron into iron oxide, commonly known as rust. During discharge, the oxygen is released, returning the iron to its original state. This method, while unsuitable for everyday electronics, proves remarkably cost-effective at a large scale, with operating and manufacturing costs significantly lower than traditional lithium-ion batteries.
Form Energy has secured over $380 million in grants from the Department of Energy, with $147 million specifically designated for the Maine project. The battery bank, at full capacity, has the potential to power up to 85,000 homes for 100 hours. The energy stored would be enough to power an electric vehicle around the world 1,288 times.
The batteries themselves are approximately the size of a washer-dryer unit and will be assembled in a station comprised of 50 units.
