Mon Sep 09 14:18:56 UTC 2024: ## Space Marine 2’s PvP Mode, Eternal War, Falls Short of Expectations

**PC Gamer** – While the campaign and co-op modes of Space Marine 2 offer a thrilling power fantasy and faithfulness to the Warhammer 40,000 lore, the game’s PvP mode, Eternal War, disappoints with its lackluster design and shallow gameplay.

Despite its “Eternal” moniker, the mode feels like a rushed afterthought, reminiscent of the basic multiplayer modes tacked onto single-player games in the 2010s. Players engage in three generic mission types across bland, boxy arenas, a stark contrast to the visually stunning campaign environments.

Eternal War also fails to capture the essence of Warhammer 40,000, neglecting the rich lore and intricate details present in other game modes. The inclusion of Chaos Space Marines feels jarring as they lack any distinctive combat style or thematic relevance, instead mirroring the loyalist Primaris marines with generic equipment and tactics.

Further hindering the mode’s enjoyment is the focus on rapid-fire combat, significantly diminishing the impact of the iconic power armor and melee combat that defines the Space Marine experience. The removal of executions further exacerbates this issue, forcing players to rely on hiding and regenerating instead of engaging in thrilling close-quarters combat.

The game’s six classes, while mirroring the Operations mode, feel poorly balanced in the PvP environment. The Assault’s jump pack abilities, exciting in co-op, become a liability against skilled players, while the Sniper’s invisibility, a niche tool in PvE, feels overpowered in PvP. Ultimately, the simple bolt gun proves to be the most effective weapon, leading to predictable and monotonous matches.

While Space Marine 2’s campaign and co-op modes offer a compelling and enjoyable experience, Eternal War fails to deliver on the promise of a captivating and immersive PvP experience. With its generic design, shallow gameplay, and lack of thematic depth, it’s unlikely to entice players to stick around for long, leaving many wondering if it will even survive its planned four seasons of updates.
