**Nairobi, Kenya** – Bernard Wangila Ojiambo, a fourth-year student at the University of Nairobi, appeared before the Milimani Law Court on Monday, September 10, 2024, to face charges of attempting to burn Hotel Boulevard during student protests against the new higher education funding model.
Ojiambo was arrested on Monday with a five-litre jerrycan of petrol near the hotel, where students had clashed with anti-riot police officers. The prosecution alleges that Ojiambo intended to commit arson, citing the presence of the jerrycan and the context of the protests.
Ojiambo, however, denied the charges. His lawyer, Danstan Omari, argued that his client was simply on his way home and was caught in the middle of the protests. Omari requested lenient bail terms, emphasizing Ojiambo’s status as a student preparing for his final year exams.
The prosecution, however, objected, citing concerns about Ojiambo potentially posing a risk if released. They highlighted recent incidents of arson at schools and Ojiambo’s involvement in the protests.
The court reserved its bail ruling until Tuesday, September 11, 2024. Ojiambo remains in custody at Capitol Hill Police Station.
This incident follows a series of protests by university students opposing the new funding model, which has sparked controversy and unrest across the country. The protests have escalated, with students engaging in clashes with police and expressing their frustration with the proposed changes.
