Ahead of the only scheduled presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump on Tuesday, the Harris campaign is urging caution against underestimating Trump’s debating skills.
Adrienne Elrod, Harris’ campaign senior spokesperson, emphasized on “Morning Joe” that Trump’s extensive experience in presidential debates, having participated in seven previously, means Harris cannot afford to underestimate him. Elrod acknowledged Trump’s effectiveness in debates, noting that he defeated President Joe Biden in their June debate.
While acknowledging Trump’s strength, Elrod highlighted Harris’ ability to hold him accountable and present her vision for the future. “I think you’re going to see her doing incredibly well in those moments,” she said.
The debate, hosted by ABC News, will be held with muted microphones, a rule requested by the Trump campaign and implemented by CNN in their June debate.
Other political analysts also weighed in on the upcoming debate. Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, appearing on “The View,” echoed Elrod’s sentiments, recognizing Trump’s “skill as a debater” and television experience.
Chris Cilizza, former CNN political analyst, believes the debate holds more significance for Harris than for Trump, citing his stable voter base and limited room for improvement in polls. Meanwhile, Mark Halperin, Newsmax political analyst, anticipates Harris to perform well, drawing from her previous debating successes.
With both candidates vying for the spotlight, the Tuesday debate promises to be a crucial moment in the 2024 presidential race.
