Mon Sep 09 15:43:36 UTC 2024: ## 1975 Denies Responsibility for Good Vibes Festival Cancellation, Blames Organizers

The 1975 has filed a defense in a legal battle with the organizers of Malaysia’s Good Vibes Festival, denying responsibility for the event’s cancellation in 2023. The band maintains that they were unaware their onstage kiss would lead to such drastic consequences, arguing that the organizers, Future Sounds Asia, should have anticipated their pro-LGBTQ stance and potential for controversy.

The band’s defense, made public last month, claims they are known for their outspoken support of LGBTQ rights and their “provocative” challenges to social norms. The 1975’s lawyers pointed to previous incidents where Healy had kissed a male fan during a performance in Dubai and unfurled a pride flag in Russia. They also emphasized that no other performance by the band had ever been interrupted or curtailed due to their actions.

Future Sounds Asia, however, insists the band was fully aware of Malaysia’s strict rules prohibiting political and religious comments, as well as certain behaviors like drinking and swearing. They accuse the band of breaching these rules through Healy’s kiss, his statements against Malaysia’s anti-LGBTQ laws, and his alleged consumption of a bottle of wine placed on stage.

The 1975 denies any intention to break the rules, claiming the kiss was spontaneous and consensual and the wine bottle was a prop containing no alcohol.

Future Sounds is demanding £2 million in damages from the band, arguing that their actions led to the festival’s cancellation, causing significant financial losses.

The legal battle is ongoing, and the 1975’s lawyers have not yet responded to a request for comment. The case highlights the complex issues surrounding artistic freedom, cultural sensitivity, and the potential for backlash when artists express controversial views on international stages.
